Project #1- Infographics

ITEC 57411 Designing Visuals for Instruction - Summer 2018
I designed two infographics for this project.

The first project was a beginners guide on the piano (on the left). It included a guide to the parts of the piano, how to find C and the rest of the note names. This was meant to be a guide for brand new piano students to assist with practice time at home.

The second was an easy beginners guide on how to practice piano (below). My piano studio includes a lot of second through sixth grade beginners so this guide was geared towards their learning levels. I used simple pictures to assist students who might not be strong readers.

Both of these assignments were used in my studio. I found that I did not need to repeat basic information nearly as often when my students used this guide at home. They were able to easily locate the parts of the piano and understood what they were to do during practice time. I don't believe either document needs to be adapted.

Project #2- "Practice Pal": Application Design

ITEC 67438 Instructional Applications of the Internet - Summer 2017
For this assignment, I created Practice Pal, an application to assist piano students with practice time. It included a task list, an RPG character who could "level up" as more practice time was gained, merchandise, note learning games, and a practice timer.

I created this mock application as at the time nothing like it was on the market. Although there are now a few applications on the market there still isn't anything quite like practice pal. I wish that I had the coding skills to bring this application to fruition.

Project 3- Webquest

This Webquest was created as a large assignment for a general music class. They were to create a small 24+ measure composition using music software. Each student was given a specific role and tasks to go along with that role. A rubric and a teachers guide were included in the website.

I was never able to bring this Webquest to fruition. In the future I may do a music camp over the summer with my piano students. If I do so, I will use this webquest as a majority of the camp curriculum as it's a great lesson in music theory.

Project 4- ITech Blog

ITEC 67438 Instructional Applications of the Internet - Summer 2017
We were instructed to create an ITech Blog. It included entries about each week of the class and a link to our professional twitter account. This was a great way to journal all of the activities we did in class to use as a resource later. I have not kept up with the blog as I found it was a lot of upkeep. I find that I prefer to use LinkedIn to document professional endeavors. I have kept up with the professional twitter account on occasion and it led me to joining ATD Cuyahoga Falls and Detroit.

Reflective Statement

Standard A: Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
  • The Infographic, Practice Pal and Webquest projects all heavily followed standard A, promoting, supporting and modeling creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. Each of these projects were heavy in creation and were also fun to create.
Standard B: Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
  • Practice Pal and The ITech Blog projects helped explore real world issues. Project 4 allowed me to have a twitter account and actively tweet other members of my professional group.
  • Project 2, the Practice Pal project, helped me to solve a problem I had in my music studio. There was no good way to encourage students to practice the piano that also was fun and engaging and had resources to help students practice better.
Standard C: Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative  processes
  • Project 1's Infographic on the parts of the piano clarified students conceptual understanding of the piano.
  • The Webquest had games written inside of the application to help understand the keyboard as well as a task manager to help students plan out how to use practice time and it gave each student a specific task and allowed them to explore how to perform that task.
Standard D. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
  • Project 3's Webquest did this best. A webquest is a great environment to work collaboratively in an engaging manner.
  • The application in the Practice Pal project is also a great way for students, teachers and parents to work collaboratively with practicing. The application can be used when students are physically meeting with their teacher and can be used to communicate with teachers when students are at home practicing.
